Shelley Appleton Coaching Information

Learn how to Train Calm, Willing, Confident Horses and Solve Problems

Most people do not realise that you train horses to be calm and confident on the ground and under saddle. This involves making sure the horse really understands what you expect it to know and do and is motivated and sound to be able to perform. These things combine to lay the foundation of a good relationship and ultimately a partnership with your horse.

When you receive coaching from Shelley, she will show you that everything you train and expect under saddle has a starting point on the ground. By understanding this starting point and how it progresses under saddle you can solve problem behaviour, remove frustration, improve your confidence and develop a special connection with your horse.

The other important thing Shelley will show you is that ANYONE can learn to be exceptional with horses. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how nervous you are, how strong you are, how brave you are etc. developing knowledge and skills to work with horses can transform your life with horses. In fact, she has coached many people that have gone on to become horse trainers and coaches!

SHELLEY CAN HELP:

Spooky/anxious/nervous/difficult horses, young/green horses, horses with ANY behavioural or riding issue OR people keen to improve the relationship with their horse, their training knowledge, skills or performance results.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

How to analyse and evaluate a horse’s behaviour and what it understands and what it can perform confidently

Strategies to improve a horse’s focus, learning and confidence

How to apply training techniques

How to progress the benefits of groundwork into under saddle training

How to overcome problems on the ground and in the saddle

How to get a horse confident, soft, seeking and consistent in contact

How to build a good relationship, meaningful connection and great performing partnership

EQUIPMENT YOU WILL NEED:

For ground work: Rope halter & 12-13ft lead rope (the greatest training tool anyone can have in their tack room), training stick & string or short lunge whip or training flag, gloves (recommended but optional), riding boots and protection boots/bandages (recommended but optional) for your horse including bell boots if your horse is shod.

For ridden work: Saddle, girth, saddle blanket, bridle, approved riding helmet (Australian standard AS/NZS 3838), whip (if required), and riding boots.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Shelley has identified 18 things that people need to know how to train that are key to teaching horses how to be calm and confident. These include leading, groundwork and under saddle activities that start in the round yard, progress to groundwork in a halter and then move into the saddle. She strongly advises everyone to start at the “start” in the training process as this produces the most efficient and effective approach. However, if you have a specific issue on the ground or under saddle you may be able to address this if Shelley believes it is possible. This is because many issues such as a lack of forward or rushing under saddle are safer and fairer on the horse if they are addressed in groundwork.
